Matryoshka
Matryoshka
The matryoshka appeared in Russia at the end of the 1890's. The idea of nesting dolls was borrowed from Japan and further developed in Russia. They were originally made as toys and have gradually become a Russian souvenir and art form. The name has Latin roots "mater" meaning "mother". I am attracted to matryoshka as an art form because of my own Russian heritage. I grew up with the rich cultural and artistic influences of my grandmother, and love the vibrant colour and detail whether it be in painting or needlework.
Eggs - A Symbol of Life
Eggs - A Symbol of Life
Cultures from every corner of the earth have used the egg as a symbol of rebirth in their rituals, folklore and folk art. Over 2000 years ago, people decorated eggs believing that great powers were embodied in them. Eggs symbolized the release of the earth from winter and the coming of spring with it's promise of new hope, new life and prosperity. Given as a gift the egg is a token of love and friendship.
Miniatures
Miniatures
There is a universal attraction to miniatures. For boys and men there is the appeal of miniature soldiers and trains; for girls and women the allure of dolls and houses. When our daughter was born, a beautiful doll house was ordered made by an aging craftsman in our town. When our son was born, my father lost no time in starting a model train collection for him. It crosses gender, time and geography.

"The world of reality has it's limits; the world of imagination is boundless. Not being able to enlarge the one, let us contract the other."
-Jean Rousseau 18th century Swiss philosopher
